Archaeological site

The Basilica of Our Lady reveals its hidden treasures. You will be able to discover 2000 years of archaeology – guaranteed to be a unique experience!

Through the generations, the people of Tongeren built a town to live and work in. The walls and foundations of that town are still standing. They can be admired on the archaeological site of the Teseum, one of the most inspiring sites in the Lower Countries.

Buried treasures

Remnants of no fewer than seven churches lie beneath the floor slabs of the present-day basilica. Traces of Roman construction works have also been found. Here you will be able to see with your own eyes that Tongeren was the first town in Belgium. Three metres below ground, age-old stones tell the story of the town, its inhabitants and the church. That story started 2000 years ago with the Roman rulers, and is still being written today.

This site is the unmissable starting point for any visit of Tongeren

Interactive tours
